Look, some of these front pages are absolutely stunning going through them. And you sort of think, you know what on earth are they... They certainly get your attention.
Hello, my name is Patrick Ryan. I've been a CPA member for over 40 years, and I've been collecting our journal since the mid-1970s.
I understand that the journal was founded in 1909 and was known as the Commonwealth Journal of Accountancy. My collection started in 1976, when CPA Australia was known as the Australian Society of Accountants, and the journal at that time was known as the Australian Accountant.
In April ‘98, the name of the journal changed to Australian CPA, with a further name change in October 2004 to INTHEBLACK.
Overall, I've collected about 490 copies of the journal. From 1976, all the way through till it became digital in 2020. About half of my journals are in burgundy-coloured binders, and they were all purchased at the Australian Society of Accountants. At that time located in Queen Street, Melbourne.
Our journal quite often included real-world experiences with members describing situations they had to deal with from time to time. Along with the suggested solutions to those experiences.
I've been genuinely contracting for over 35 years, specialising in financial and management accounting, across a range of industries in both big and small companies within Australia and also overseas. And during that time, the journal has been very useful.
Our journal, now known as INTHEBLACK magazine, has helped me expand my knowledge of the accounting profession. It's a lot more than just bookkeeping. These journals have been a small part of my history as a CPA, and a small part of your history too.
